This indicator shows the age-adjusted obesity-related hospitalization rate per 100,000 population.
Why is this important?
Obesity is defined as excess fat accumulation that may impair health, and is commonly classified using the body mass index (BMI). The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defines obesity as a BMI equal to or greater than 30 (whereas overweight is defined as a BMI between 25 and 29.9). More than one-third of U.S. adults and approximately 17% of children are obese. Obesity increases the risks for a number of health conditions including hypertension, coronary heart disease, type-2 diabetes, and certain types of cancers.
